Why do people take away our dreams?

Gary Hamel, an American Management Consultant founder of Strategos an international management consulting firm in Chicago & C.K.Prahalad a corporate and social strategist, educator and author, Professor at the University of Michigan described an experiment carried out on monkeys.

The first part of the experiment shown four hungry monkeys locked inside a cage with a very tall pole. A bunch of bananas was hanged at the top of the pole. As soon as one of the monkeys climbed to get the fruits, it was doused with cold water. The monkey came back down screaming. It made no more attempts to reach the bunch of bananas. Another monkey climbed the pole, cold water was poured on again, more screaming and no more attempts either. The same goes for the third and fourth monkey...

The second part of the experiment was for the researchers to bring in a new monkey which had not experienced the cold water before. As soon as the new monkey climbed up the pole to grab a banana the other monkeys tried to pull him down.

Over time, scientists replaced all monkeys one at a time with new ones, so that in the end none of them had been doused with water. Each time the new monkey was pulled down by the others. As a result, all monkeys stopped climbing for bananas. Even those that were never doused with water.

This tells you that sometimes, other people can pull you down because of their own fear of failure (FOF). Maybe they experienced failure themselves in the past and they want to protect you. Maybe they stopped to believe in themselves and found it hard to admit it. Sometimes we bring ourselves down by letting other’s critical voices into our heads. For example, you may hear: "you are not made for this, you’ll see you can't do it, you are not good enough"!

It is important that we can influence ourselves, our thoughts despite of what we hear! To do so, we must choose the people that surrounds us carefully to receive the best support and not being harmed. Everything starts in our head and then we can start creating a plan, a strategy.

Step by step, to get closer to what we dream of, to what we need and want, to grab the bananas, we must keep trying, no matter the approach we chose.
